We want to remind you to stay cautious of impersonation scams targeting expat students in Hong Kong. Scammers posing as police or officials may demand money, using fake documents like police warrant cards to trick you.
How the Scams Work:
- They claim you’re involved in crimes like money laundering to scare you.
- They demand payments to “prove innocence” or as “surety” through cash or bank transfers.
- They show fake IDs, including forged police or official documents.
- Sometimes, they recruit students as accomplices to handle money, promising “easy money.”
How to Protect Yourself:
1. Verify identities by contacting HK Police Anti-Deception Coordination Centre (ADCC) at 18222 or the Privacy Commissioner’s Scameter at 3423 6611.
2. Never send money or share personal details with unsolicited callers.
3. Stay alert to urgent or threatening messages asking for payments or info.
4. Check your university’s anti-fraud resources for more tips.
5. Report any suspicious calls or activities to the police immediately via ADCC’s 24/7 hotline 18222.
New students, especially from mainland China, are often targeted around the academic year start. Watch out for poorly made fake IDs and never give out your passwords or bank info.
